Home Care After Crowns

Caring for Your Teeth After Dental Crowns Procedure
After receiving dental crowns, it is normal for the gums around the treated tooth to feel sore, tender, or appear red and irritated. Your mouth needs time to heal and adjust, especially if a temporary crown was placed. Proper care during this period helps prevent complications and ensures your crown fits comfortably and functions correctly.
Managing Gum Soreness and Irritation
Some gum sensitivity is expected following the procedure. Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater three times a day can help reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. Be gentle when brushing near the treated area, and avoid aggressive flossing around the temporary crown. Keeping the area clean supports healing and lowers the risk of infection.
Eating and Chewing Precautions
While wearing a temporary crown, avoid chewing gum and stay away from sticky, hard, or crunchy foods. These foods can loosen or damage the temporary crown. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible, and choose softer foods until your permanent crown is placed. Avoid biting directly into foods like candy, ice, or crusty bread.
If Crowns Comes Loose
In some cases, a temporary crown may loosen or fall off. If this happens, gently rinse the crown with water and place it back over the tooth if possible. Do not force it into place. Contact our office as soon as you can so we can properly secure it and protect the tooth underneath. Leaving the tooth uncovered for too long may cause sensitivity or allow the tooth to shift.
Oral Hygiene and Daily Care
Continue brushing twice a day and flossing daily, but take extra care around the crown area. Slide floss out gently instead of pulling it straight up to avoid dislodging the temporary crown. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps protect the tooth and surrounding gum tissue while you wait for your final restoration.
