Home Care After Tooth Extraction

Home Care After Tooth Extraction
After a tooth extraction, it is normal to experience stiffness, swelling, soreness, and light bleeding. These symptoms are part of the natural healing process. Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed and monitor how you feel throughout the day. Immediately after the procedure, we will place moist gauze over the extraction site for you to bite on for 30–45 minutes to help control bleeding. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite down again for another 30–45 minutes. Repeat this process as needed. If heavy bleeding does not improve, please contact our office.
Managing Swelling and Discomfort from Tooth Extraction
Swelling commonly occurs within the first 24–48 hours. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the treated area for the first few hours following your appointment. Use the ice pack for 15 minutes on, then 15 minutes off. Keeping your head elevated while resting or sleeping for the next two days can also help reduce swelling and discomfort. Mild to moderate pain can usually be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication, taken with food and according to instructions.
Protecting the Healing Area
To allow proper healing after a tooth extraction, avoid smoking, spitting, drinking through straws, or consuming carbonated beverages. These actions can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, which may delay healing or lead to dry socket. Stick to soft foods for the first day or two and avoid chewing directly on the extraction site. Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid hot drinks until tenderness improves.
Oral Hygiene and Daily Care
Continue brushing and flossing your teeth, but be gentle around the extraction area. Avoid brushing directly over the site for the first 24 hours. After the first day, gentle warm saltwater rinses can help keep the area clean and soothe the gums. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol unless specifically recommended.
