What Are the Different Types of Dentures?

People wear dentures to replace their missing or lost teeth. This way, they get to smile with confidence and enjoy a healthier diet. Properly made dentures closely resemble your natural teeth and can fill out your natural appearance. They are often made of metal or plastic (acrylic). There are two major types of dentures—full or complete dentures and partial dentures.

However, other factors determine the type of dentures that best suit you. Here are a few insights.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures fill in the gaps left by missing or lost teeth. They are often fastened to your natural teeth using precision attachments or clasps. Removable partial bridges or dentures usually comprise replacement teeth attached to pink bases. They are helpful when you have one or more natural teeth left in the lower or upper jaw.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures replace all-natural teeth in the lower or upper jaws. Unlike dental bridges, complete dentures sit on top of your gums. These complete or full dentures are typically ready for placement approximately 8 to 12 weeks after teeth extraction.

Custom Dentures

Unlike other dentures, custom dentures are often made of costlier teeth, resulting in a more natural-appearing smile. The prosthodontist will customize the denture for your smile, suit your needs, and make it more natural-looking. Typically, you can see the new denture before its completion.

Snap-in Dentures

When it comes to stability, snap-in dentures are the ideal choice. They are often placed using anchors or implants onto the existing teeth. They are distinctive because of the locator attachments rooted in their tissue side.

These locator attachments snap onto the locator receptors or implants. Like partial dentures, it makes them both removable and convenient. They are helpful in patients without teeth but have ample bone support for implants.

Implant-supported Dentures

Dental implants are often used to support and secure the denture with this type of denture. It offers a significant amount of support for a strong foundation. This ensures the denture stays securely in place. Additionally, implant-supported dentures are quite long-lasting and natural-looking.

Immediate Dentures

As mentioned, conventional complete dentures take between 8 to 12 weeks for optimal placement. However, dentists can fit dentures right after extracting your tooth. These types of dentures are commonly known as immediate dentures. Nonetheless, you will have to visit your dentist in advance. It allows them to take impressions and measurements of your mouth.

You will not have spaces in your mouth while your gums are healing. However, your gums and bone may shrink after the extraction of your natural tooth. This means your immediate dentures may need adjusting, relining, or replacing. Your dentist may recommend waiting for your gums to heal before getting dentures.

Your prosthodontist will recommend how often you should visit if you have dentures. However, six months is the advisable period. Additionally, regular dental checks are necessary to ensure optimal dental health. Your dentist can detect signs of oral diseases and begin early treatment.
