Home Care After Tissue Trim

Home Care After a Tissue Trim Procedure
Dental tissue trim is a specialized dental procedure that reshapes the gums to expose more of the natural tooth structure. After your tissue trim procedure, it is normal for the treated area to appear tender, red, or raw as the gums heal. These symptoms are expected and should gradually improve over time. Following proper aftercare instructions is essential to promote healing and prevent irritation.
Caring for the Tissue Trim Surgical Area
After surgery, a protective dressing—similar to a bandage—will be placed over the treated site. This dressing helps shield the gums from air, liquids, and food while healing begins. It is typically left in place for two to three days. Once that time has passed, you may gently remove it yourself if it loosens naturally. Do not force it off early.
You may continue brushing your teeth as part of your regular routine, but be gentle near the surgical site. Avoid scrubbing or directly brushing the treated area until tenderness improves. The gums may look sensitive or raw during healing, which is completely normal. Do not poke, pull, or disturb the area.
Reducing Discomfort and Supporting Healing
Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater three times a day can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Be gentle when rinsing—do not swish aggressively. Mild soreness or discomfort may occur and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen, taken with food and according to instructions.
Foods and Habits to Avoid
To protect the healing gums, avoid spicy foods, vinegar, acidic fruits, citrus juices, crunchy snacks, and hard foods. These items can irritate the surgical site and slow healing. Choose soft, cool foods during the initial recovery period. Avoid smoking, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
