Home Care After Implants

After dental implant surgery, protect the wound so it can heal properly. Avoid spitting, rinsing, or touching the treated area on the day of surgery. Minor bleeding is normal for up to 24 hours. If bleeding becomes heavy, place moist gauze on the site and bite down for 30–45 minutes. If the bleeding does not slow down, please contact us immediately.
Swelling is also normal after surgery. Apply an ice pack on the cheek near the treated area for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off, for the first few hours. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, but avoid hot foods and drinks. Stick to soft foods on the day of your procedure to avoid irritation. Always take prescribed medications exactly as directed and never on an empty stomach. If you run out of medication, you may use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. Contact us if you experience severe pain.
Keep the area clean to support healing. Brush and floss carefully, avoiding direct pressure on the implant sites. Use the Peridex oral rinse the night of surgery, then twice daily afterward for at least 30 seconds each time. You may also rinse with warm saltwater 4–5 times a day to help reduce soreness. Avoid strenuous exercise until we tell you it is safe to resume normal activity.
